Residents of Bukembe area of Kanduyi constituency, Bungoma County, were today thrown into mourning after a speeding ambulance belonging to Bungoma County government hit and crashed to death a 20-year- old woman who was crossing the road.
The ambulance was heading towards Webuye from Bungoma town when the accident occurred at Bukembe market.
Members of the public who witnessed the incident say the victim identified as Elizabeth Namikoye was crossing the road when the speeding ambulance knocked her.
Bungoma South Police Commander Benjamin Kimwele confirmed the incident and urged ambulance drivers to avoid unnecessary speeding, especially along the busy Webuye- Malaba highway.
The police boss revealed that the deceased sustained serious head injuries. He said police have launched investigations to establish whether the girl was a student or not.
Kimwele said the body has been transported to Bungoma County referral hospital mortuary to await a post mortem examination. The driver of the ambulance escaped unhurt.
