Seventeen suspects, who were allegedly involved in the recent attack on Azimio la Umoja’s presidential flag bearer, Raila Odinga’s, that occurred during the burial of the late Mzee Jackson Kibor have been arraigned before the Chief magistrate court in Eldoret.
The seventeen, sixteen men and one woman, have been charged with malicious destruction of property, attempted murder, incitement to violence and creating disturbance.
The prosecution prayed for the court to allow the suspects to be detained for fourteen days at Eldoret Police Station to allow for the conclusion of the investigation.
According to the prosecution, initial investigations have revealed that some of the suspects were sponsored and ferried to the burial from different parts of the country, and therefore their places of aboard are not known.
The Court further heard that the case involved some senior politicians and the investigation officers needed more time to acquire all the necessary statements.
However, through their lawyer, the accused persons told the court that they pose no flight risk, given that they all come from soy constituencies in Uasin Gishu.
The Court ruled that the suspects be remanded at Eldoret police station for seven working days in order to give the investigative officer (IO) ample time to conduct the investigation.
The mention of the case was set for 13th of April 2022, pending the investigation by the IO.
