Three University of Nairobi students are feared dead after a boat they were using capsized in Lake Victoria, Busia County, Saturday evening, as they took a fun boat ride on the eve of the new year.
Confirming the incident, Bunyala Police Boss, Isaiah Mose, said the three were among seven students from the university who were taking selfies in the boat.
He said reports indicate two bodies have been retrieved while four of the students were rescued by nearby residents.
Efforts by Kenya Coast Guards to retrieve the other body had not borne fruits by the time the rescue team was forced to call off the exercise due to darkness. The search resumed today morning.
“Our Officers were unable to continue with the exercise last evening due to bad weather and darkness. We have called on a multi-agency team to join the local and Kenya Coast Guard in the search,” noted Mose.
The seven who were on an evangelism mission in Budalangi, were taking selfies on an overloaded boat when it capsized.
“The boat has a capacity of three passengers but students had overloaded it, resulting in the calamity. We are going to be vigilant along the lake to ensure safety measures are put in place,” he added.
